Hope you enjoyed this experience.... You have learned much about Web 2.0 power in taking this class.... the ability to create and post visual content, not only for your peers, but for the world to see both on the blog and in fotothing is a very powerful step forward.

Week 7: The Surrealist Aesthetic

Hello all,

Sorry about my lateness with this post - I am trying to get rid of some nasty cold / seasonal allergy (I'm allergic to cold weather!) and it has kept me down and out for the best part of the week. Well, here are a few of my favorite surrealist images from this week.

You'll notice that one of them is not actually from the website... I realized that everything I had created was slightly more unsettling and nightmarish than what others were coming up with; so I decided to go all-out in Photoshop and create something weird using real photographic images. (sort of a "realist/surrealism..?)

Hence the stormy, apocalyptic little number called Day Eleven. (shown here) The figure is supposed to be made of rock, sand, barnacles and seaweed, and represent a "the ocean's interpretation" of a human. Weird, but fun to do. There is another version of it on FotoThing with a different color cast to it. Really fun assignment!!

These are my favorite pictures of the week. My daughter was so kind to let me photograph her and trust that I would capture her best likeness. I took several pictures of her. Most of them I edited to black and white, changed the contrast, tint, and brightness in order to make them look as if they were taken in the 60's.

Hey all,

Here are a few of my favorite shots from this week's assignment. This is the first time I have ever shot images like this strictly using natural light and no flash whatsoever. I wanted to go about it as if I was a fashion photographer out shooting a magazine cover, so I called on the amazing "LittleWing" to model for me.

These are what I came up with - strictly with natural light and two Nikons. This was truly fun, and I just may do more of the total natural light shooting as it does look much more real than the over-produced (a perfect description) stuff that we see so often!

I had so much fun taking pictures of flowers at a local greenhouse that before I knew it, I had taken over 300 pictures within about 2 hours! Nature is so beautiful and much easier than photographing human beings. Nature doesn't complain about the way it looks in the photograph or the way you took the picture. It has been hard narrowing down the best ones. I've already posted ten on fotothing and I anticipate adding more. Check out the picture of the moth on the flower on my fotothing. It actually let me get that close! Soon I will also post a flower that has an ant on the tip of the flower and you can actually see it. I was mostly pleased with my camera's capability to let me photograph up close. There were many retakes because I would get too close and the photograph would be blurred. I do hope you find these pleasing to view. I sincerely enjoyed photographing them.

Hello everybody,

Here are a couple of shots from the macro-photography assignment. I shot another that was intended to look like a crime scene from the television show CSI Miami (complete with brownish warm tone) and another shot of a wood spider that is probably not the best thing for anyone who is arachnaphobic... (Personally, I think the spider was far more afraid of the big creature with the camera looming in on it, however)

I shot these with a Panasonic Lumix. But I really want to now try some stuff with an ancient,

manual focus (and metered) Nikkor 55mm Micro lens and Pk-3 extender! Hopefully I can crank out some shots with that bad-boy!

My favorite place to be is always by the sea. I love to sit back, watch, and listen to the sounds of the ocean. I never gave much notice to the forms in the sand or rock formations. Greetings!

Here are two shots from this week's assignment By The Sea. I shot in color and converted a few to grayscale, largely to keep the greens and yellows that popped more under the diffused light of

the clouds. These were all shot in West Haven, near Bradley Point.

This is a really great area if you are looking for rock outcroppings and texture, since you can come numerous times a day and shoot the same things under different lighting and tidal conditions; and still get interesting shots!

The first photo is of my family sprinkling my cousin Calvin's ashes at the lighthouse. The funny thing about them sprinkling ashes is that there was an updraft and the ashes kept flying back toward everyone as if my cousin was telling them, I'm not going in that water. And I like how they created a chain to keep Calvin Jr. from falling. And the second is my daughter on the beach.

Hi Everyone.

I was riding down Prospect Street and my youngest daughter said, "mommy there is a man on the side of that building in a tin man suit can you turn around so I can see him". To my surprise, it was actually a soldier/tin man made of some sort of aluminum. I go down Prospect Street every day and never noticed it before. I just thought it was kinda cool the way they have him standing on the building. I posted a few more photos that I thought were pretty interesting on Fotothing. More for the shapes and images.

A few new posts on my FotoThing site for this week's assignment. ("Downtown") I am going out to shoot more for this assignment, since once I got started I have gotten way more into it than I thought I would. Strangely enough, the old Petula Clark song was going through my head most of the time - I gotta get that checked out... Anyway, I shot in black and white here, but I am thinking of doing some color stuff as well. I appologize for the 'keystoning' (converging line distortion) on the buildings in these photos, but without the swings and tilts, and whatnot of a proper view camera, my attempts at architecture are limited to the impressionistic.

Im not sure if Im suppose to post this here but I figured id give it a shot.
Does anyone have pointers on getting well focused picture, close up or when I zoom close in.
I have a Nikon Coolpic s550, but I dont have the book anymore.
Ive never had to take pictures close up, but I was trying to yesterday, and 80% or more came out blurry. I know theres a macro option, but I dont remember where to find it, and the menu isnt very user friendly for me.

Hi all. My name is Nancy. This is my third year at Albertus, and my major is English. I am hoping to go onto law school after I get my bachelors degree. In general, I have an aversion to cameras, including taking pictures and being in them, and I am hoping that this class will help me become more comfortable with photography. I have a five year old daughter, so you can see how not taking pictures is just unacceptable at this point. It’s not that I don’t like taking pictures, it’s just that I find myself too caught up in the moment to stop enjoying what is happening, and reach for my camera. But, over the past few years, I’ve missed countless opportunities to document some once in a life time things that now I can’t get back. I am hoping that this class will help develop my skills and also my appreciation for photography.

My name is Danyelle Jones and I am the mother of two daughters 17 and 7. I am currently a Sr. Buyer/MRP Controller at Pratt & Whitney in Middletown. I've lived in New Haven most of my life. I love serving God and enjoy spending time with my family.

This is my last class in the Bachelor's Program in Business Management and once I am complete, I will be going on to the Master's Program in Environmental Engineeering.

I have no experience taking pictures as you will see in my photos. I am not very photogenic and try to stay as far away from the camera as possible. I am trying to overcome my bad camera experiences of just point and click along with taking self portraits that make me look like a crazy lady who lost her best friend. I want to be able to use my creativity and project them through pictures. This is definitely a learning experience for me and I encourage and am open to any tips you can provide.

What Do I Need To Do This Week?

Hi Everyone,

Here is a check list of things to do this week. Due by early Monday Morning, August 31, 2009.

1. Create your Blooger Account. Reply to the email that blogger sent you by clicking on the link. If the link is not an active one, copy and paste it into your browser window and hit return... you will be brought to the correct log-in page. To learn how to post and log in read this tutorial I created on my website.

It really is easy.... If you have an alias like "Inspector" or "Snapshot", let me know who you are so you can get credit for the post!

2. Post a photo of yourself... be creative! Try a reflection, your shadow, or just a straight shot. Tell us something about yourself.

3. Download and install Picasa3 software... This takes just a couple of minutes. Look at the video on how to use Picasa3 I created by following the link from the blog. Learn how to get pictures from your camera onto your computer using Picasa3.

4. Create a Fotothing account at fotothing.com... let me know your alias and go to http://fotothing.com/jnevins and add me as a "friend" That way you will be a member of the online class portfolio site.

It is VERY important to get these technical issues out of the way in this first week so that you don't fall behind!

Attendance is taken every Monday morning. I am looking for a post to this blog and an image uploaded to your fotothing account as a minimum.

Week 1: Self-Portrait

Hello! My name is Cheryl Vereen. I am a senior at Albertus and striving to obtain my Bachelor's Degree in the spring. I currently work for the New Haven Board of Education as an assistant teacher in the area of special education. I have 4 grown children and 6 grandchildren. Getting my degree is something that I have dreamed of for a very long time. Photography interests me because a picture can say many things and can hold valuable memories. I bought a digital camera about 2 years ago and never really learned how to use the various settings. This course will force me to have to learn more about my camera, how to get that perfect shot, and I can use these tools to take better photos. I like all kinds of pictures from landscape to nature to family, and the list continues. I am positive this will be a great learning experience. It took a while for me to learn how to use fotothing, but I finally got it.

Hello fellow photographers!

My name is Chuck Franke, and I have been involved with photography for most of my life, in one form or another. I have gone through "all of the stages" as the famed Chuck Delaney calls them: Obsessing over the art, Obsessing over the equipment, Obsessing over lighting, Obsessing over the business, and now I am finally back to obsessing over the art again. While I do make money at photography, I do not feel that anyone can ever stop learning about the art of creating images. I honestly look forward to this class because already it has me re-examining my approach to this facinating art, and exploring it on levels that I have not had opportunity to for quite some time.

Hi Everyone!

To get things started, let me tell you a bit about myself.... I have been teaching full time at Albertus Magnus College for the past 30 years and am grateful for the opportunity to spend my life working with students who want to learn more about art. I've been married for the past 34 years, and have 2 wonderful sons, 26 and 30. My older son is married and has two sons.... (All living with us!) ...a 2 year old and a 3 month old. He works for Disney as an Art Director and Graphic Designer in their book division.

My main interest is photography and I earned an M.F.A. in still photography from Rochester Institute of Technology.
