Week 6: The Digital Portrait

These are my favorite pictures of the week. My daughter was so kind to let me photograph her and trust that I would capture her best likeness. I took several pictures of her. Most of them I edited to black and white, changed the contrast, tint, and brightness in order to make them look as if they were taken in the 60's.

Cool shots - I like the black and white ones. This look (higher jey, lower contrast) is really in vogue now with many photographers. Very cutting edge :-)

By the way, I meant to say "Higher KEY" as in high-key, uber-lighted photograph. I dont think "higher jey" is really a word. :-p

Thanks Chuck. I really played with the editing tools to get the effects that I wanted to achieve in the black and white photos on fotothing. These photos were taken on a cloudy day.

Cloudy day ... good.

The top one is stunning as there isn't a bright outside light competing with her face.

Bottom one looks like the flash went off....

In Photoshop, you can make selections to darken select areas to bring the viewer's eyes back into her eyes.... the focal point of any portrait.

I took these photos all at the same time without changing any of the settings, so I can't explain why the bottom one looks as if the flash went off even though it didn't. I have no explanation, but I'm happy they all turned out the way I wanted and it seems as though I did a pretty good job.
